Topics covered:

  • An overview of the new NHS structures
  • An overview of the new health education system for London
  • A discussion about what these changes mean for the London Health Libraries network

Richard Osborn used slides produced by the Nuffield Trust to give an overview of the NHS changes. Mistake was noted on slide 10: Academic Health Science Networks are not funded by HEE and LETBs, but by NHS England.

Chris Fowler, Managing Director of Health Education North Central and East London, gave an overview of the HEE mandate and spoke about the challenges faced by the LETBs in London.  Funding is a key issue.  He suggested that the LHL network should produce some guidance for LETBs on future library funding and this will be taken forward by the LHL Library Council.

Participants looked at the infographic produced by NHS Employers and it was noted that the system remains in a state of flux and will continue to be so for some considerable time.

Other useful material on the reforms is available from the BMA website.

Looking at the future shape of library and knowledge services, Chris mentioned the trend of increasing electronic and mobile access to resources and the impact that this will have on “library plant” across London.
